People ask me what type of subject seems most popular. That’s an easy question because by far and away the most popular types of (my) paintings are seascapes. They outsell landscapes by perhaps 2:1.
Now it might be that my seascapes are my best work, but i like to think that seascapes are more universal, more elemental than landscapes. A landscape is very specific to a certain place (stating the obvious I know!) but a seascape can be much more abstract. A stormy sea at Blackpool is very similar to a stormy sea in Mexico, in the Mediterranean or in Bali. And I think that’s why seascapes are so popular, because they can’t be pinned down. The artist might represent a sunset over the sea somewhere in New England, but buyers will alway see their own seascapes, reflected in the artists unique point of view.
After a break of a few months, I’m back painting seascapes. They’re inspired by the sea at Tenby in South Wales, but to the people who see them, I hope they can bring back memories of their favourite beaches and cliffs.
